What is the most common cause of a running toilet leak?

Most running toilets are caused by a worn or misaligned flapper or flush valve that no longer seals the tank. A continuous trickle past the seal keeps the fill valve running. Our plumbers most often see this in Marion and Gas City homes.

Quick checks:

  • Add food coloring to the tank; color in the bowl = flapper leak.
  • Ensure the flapper chain has slight slack.
  • If water rises, close the toilet shutoff valve clockwise.
