How should a backflow preventer be installed in a residential system?

A licensed plumber should install the backflow preventer on the main supply where it protects the hazard (often after the meter or before irrigation). The unit must be upright, accessible, and oriented with the flow arrow in the correct direction. Include shutoff valves, unions for service, and test ports. Use the right device for the risk (double-check for low hazard; reduced-pressure type for higher hazard). Provide safe drainage for relief discharge on RP units. Final testing and code compliance are required in Marion.
