How can I tell if my backflow preventer is leaking from the weep hole?

A steady drip or stream from the weep/relief hole usually means the internal check or relief valve isn’t sealing. Brief discharge only when water flows or after heating cycles can point to debris, thermal expansion, or high pressure. Continuous leakage suggests worn seals, freeze damage, or a failed check assembly.

Quick checks:

  • Note if it drips constantly or only when fixtures run.
  • Gently flush strainers if accessible.
  • Verify outdoor piping wasn’t frozen.
  • If leaking persists, schedule service.
